Free Agency or Draft?

The Vikings have some glaring needs along the OLine, Wr, and Safety, should we try to fill atleast one of them in FA? Is there a big named FA who would solve all our problems? Doubtful, but maybe we should pick up some mid level guys that Zimmer and company are familiar with in hopes of transitioning the younger guys into more important roles.

A list of some of these players: http://espn.go.com/blog/minnesota-vikings/post/_/id/18149/mike-zimmers-former-players-could-make-sense-for-vikings-in-free-agency

What are your thoughts? Is there a player you guys want? Or should we build through the draft, while relying on the support structure currently in place?

  1. Bengals FA Safety George Iloka seems to like the idea of playing for Zim again.
He is a better run defender than in pass coverage. He is fairly young, not yet 26, so he has time and room to grow and may very well be a good compliment to Hitman Smithy.

  2. The best defensive player in the draft was LB Jaylon Smith till he tore his ACL in Notre Dame’s bowl game and likely will miss all of next season, with all that said would you guys take a mid to late round chance on him knowing he will do nothing this season?

    • If Smith is really that good, I’d be fine spending a 2nd rounder on him. Greenway wasn’t injured when we drafted him, but he picked up an injury that caused him to miss all of his first season, and we spent a first rounder on the guy. I’m sure everyone is still happy that we drafted him, seeing how much he provided the team over the course of his career.

In free agency, I hope that we pick up one big name offensive lineman. Then I hope they can get some discount, incentive driven contracts on Wallace, Kalil and maybe Loadholt. That should set things up decently to continue with the BPA philosophy in the draft, and trust that Zimmer and his trio of former head coaches on the offensive side of the ball can build the young talent into solid contributors everywhere that we need improvement.

  3. Bengals WR Marvin Jones is likely the best option in FA for WR, but he is not likely going to be a no. 1. Would it still be worth it to kick the tires on him and see if he would like a non-bank breaking deal? Or should we stick with the waste of cap space Wallace?

    • Don’t stick with the wasted space on Wallace. Spielman should do everything he can to restructure his deal to something very cap friendly. If he doesn’t accept, then cut his ass, but don’t reach for somebody in free agency either. We’re better off trying to make it work with the guys we have and whoever we can find in the draft. If things don’t work out this year, then we just need to be patient and trust Zimmer’s defense to make up for the deficits in the offense.

  4. 1-year deal agreed with Kenrick Ellis. Depth for the DLine.

I’m not overly happy we resigned Sendejo for that much. Perhaps it was meant as bait for potential free agents? Sort of a “look what we paid the 4th worst safety in the league – imagine what we’ll pay for actual talent” kind of thing?????

  5. Loadholt restructures for a major cut in pay. Vikes re-sign Thielen and Bykowski, place tender on Zach “I walk the” Line.

Contacted Mitchel Schwartz. Reportedly expressed “serious interest” in Iloka.

The Schwartz rumor has me intrigued. Great durability, above-average stats. Now that Loadholt re-signed, it doesn’t make much sense. Neither of the 2 play anything other than RT. Maybe Schwartz was contingency plan, and they are just following through because they already had meetings/contacts set up?

Thielen is poised for his breakout season, especially if Teddy gets his protection. Bykowski showed promise up until he got hurt

Line is good at what he does, but I wish he did it more often. They should involve him more. Perhaps placing tender is bait for suitors.

Kalil decision must be made by Wednesday.

  6. Sounds very likely that Mike Wallace is going to be cut.

Really wonder what that 5th round pick could have turned into for the Vikings…
Diggs was a 5th and he had a solid showing and likely will continue to improve.
Heck the 7th we gave up for this year could likely have netted a solid ST guy.

  7. It is reported that OT/G Mike Harris wants around 5 million over 2 years, so he wants a 1.5 mill increase over the Vikings offer. Will they find a middle ground or will the Vikings lose a very good back up/reliable starter?

    • We could likely sign the Bengals other Safety, Reggie Nelson, for alittle more than what we are paying Sendejo and the Hitman would have a reliable starter beside him. The only real issue with Nelson is his age, causing him to be a limited time only deal.

  8. Yet again, it’s looking like the team will let all the FA dust settle with the actual talent either finding a new home or re-signing in place, then throw a few dollars at what’s left, only to cut them during camp/preseason.

  9. The Giants have signed CB Janoris Jenkins to a 5 year $62.5 million, with $29 million guaranteed. Very good, nearly a shut down, CB maybe he will be able to salvage the once very good defense of the Giants.

This contract may shed some light on what Rhodes will look like in the future, if he gets less handsy.

  10. While not a need, it would be interesting to see what Zim could do with DE/DT Akiem Hicks. With what happened with Joseph missing action it prove that you can never have to much talent on the DLine.

    • So we added Boone to play LG and Fusco is moving back to RG, where he is a hell of a player, seems like a pretty solid signing.
Hopefully Harris comes back as seen by last year you never know when you’ll need a good backup OLinemen.

  11. Rhett Ellison may be moving on, based off of a facebook post from his father.
Ellison is a hell of a blocking TE, but suffered a torn patellar tendon and likely will be out till training camp.

  12. Texans reached an agreement QB Brock Osweiler on a four-year, $72 million deal, $37 million guaranteed.
This is what happens when a team is so hard up for a QB they jump at one who has started less than 16 games.

  15. Just ran by an article stating that part of the new stadium lies on a street called Chicago Avenue, and the powers that be refused to let the brass change the name to ”Vikings Way”. any truth to that ??

  16. Touchbacks move to 25 yard line. There’s speculation that this will either help or hurt Patterson. Hurt him by making him even more irrelevant, since kickers send the ball out the back of the endzone most of the time, and he rarely gets past the 25 yard line when he does return one. Help him by causing kickers to try and force more returns and let coverage trap the returner inside the 25, giving him more return opportunities with potential to break one (which can now be termed the “Peterson-Patterson Potential.”)

What do you think is more likely to happen?

    • It would be nice to get Treadwell, but I would be very surprised to see that two other teams decided to draft a different WR with him still available. I still prefer Doctson though. He just appears to be more of what Teddy needs.
