Power Rankings – Week 5

We are now five weeks into the season, and even though a few teams have already had to suffer through a painstakingly gruesome bye-week, we have enough data to put out our first power ranking for the season.  Unlike other power rankings you might find elsewhere on the net, these rankings make an effort to give each game of each week throughout the entire season equal value.  Other sites will attempt to say that the team five weeks ago is different from the team today, and current games should get more value than those that have faded from memory.  I think that it is too arrogant to make such an assumption, as each game paints a picture of what each team is made of throughout the entire season.  In that light, as the season progresses, moves up and down the chart will be less noticeable as individual games will have less weight on the overall power that the team has already displayed.

Thanks in part to an embarrassing loss in week one to one of the lowest ranked teams on this list, you’ll see that the Vikings currently find themselves right in the middle of the league.  On the positive side of this ranking is that all of the Vikings’ next five opponents are ranked below them.  The Rams are sitting highest of those five teams, just two spots below the Vikings, but will be at a disadvantage as they will be visitors to a team that has proven to be much more effective on their home turf.  Though they are ranked lower, Oakland currently looks to be the toughest of the next five match-ups with their homefield advantage proving strong whereas the other two road opponents (Chicago and Detroit) have thus-far performed very poorly on their own turf.

These next five games cannot be overlooked, but if the team plays as good as they ought to against them, they should come away with four or even five wins, building up some strong confidence heading into a difficult end of the season.  It could easily build enough confidence to take out Green Bay the following week, who is currently only favored by 2.8 points.  When that happens, this team will be firing on all cylinders and will be ready to lead a strong push into the playoffs.

  1. As for my prediction this week, I’m going to say that the Vikings continue their custom of putting up a disappointing performance following a bye-week, but actually come away from this year’s bye with a win, (due in no small part to the fact they are hosting a team that has performed significantly worse than them this year and just lost a cornerstone to their offense).

    Final score: Vikings 22 – Chiefs 19.

  2. This game has me more worried than any of the next 5. 5 straight losses coming out of the bye, getting SOUNDLY whooped and outscored 158-60. Was it a product of a crappy team that season, or poor preparation?

That said, you have to look at those teams and believe most of those losses were because we had a crappy team. Historically, we are 16-9 after the bye, we WERE 16-4 before this 5-game slump.

On paper, we should demolish the Chefs (“Great googily moogily!”). I agree with Parody – we pull out the win. However, I’m waiting until the end of the week to decide if it’s a squeaker or a blowout.
