Adrian Peterson Deactivated for Patriots Game

Adrian Peterson

I’m sure many of you have already heard about the breaking news, but it turns out Adrian Peterson has been indicted for injuring his son while disciplining him.  The latest news that I’ve been able to find indicates that among other things, he has been deactivated for Sunday’s game against the Patriots because of this incident.

Adrian appears to be a loving father, as depicted in these images, and his full cooperation and honesty about the issue gives credit to his actions for being nothing more than a father disciplining his child, albeit in a manner that is frowned upon in today’s society. Society now has gone so far as to turn these people into criminals. Granted, I do not know the extent of his son’s injury, I still contend that society is going to far in prying into people’s lives in telling them how to handle their children when they misbehave. Too many children these days get away with far too much misbehaving, and it is all due to the fact that parents are terrified to correct the action, because they will be punished for trying to correct their children. So instead, they allow these miscreants to run rampant in the world.

Now the Vikings must figure out how to beat the Patriots without their star running back. With Asiata and McKinnon trying to fill the void, will the Patriots back off and shut down all aspects of the offense? Will they go too far in ignoring the backups, and allow them to have career days? Or will Turner trust them too much, and allow them to make mistakes in critical times during the game? We can only wait and hope that this team is strong enough to scrap together a win against a team that has been a playoff superstar for the past decade.

  1. I had so much respect for Adrian, for being one of the good guys out there who didn’t act like a total DBag – either with his personality or actions off the field.

However, if what I am now learning from TMZ is accurate, it looks like one of my most recent heroes (yes adults can have them too), has let me down in a large way.

    • There’s a difference between hitting someone and abusing them. You can reprimand a child with a gentle slap to the rear, causing little more than a sting and an adrenaline rush and get a point across.

With very little knowledge of the incident, I was hoping that people had gone off the deep end and turned something that was intended as such a reprimand into a much larger issue. After having seen the pictures, I feel that I probably gave Adrian too much credit. But I am still not about to jump to conclusions and label him before having a chance to review all the evidence that I can as it unfolds.

      • Have some kids and THEN talk. A stern glance from me ( not too often ) would suffice with my two girls.
But that was in the early 90’s, when people spoke to each other without texting.

        • No. I have as much right to my opinion as you have to your own. Telling me that I cannot talk about something because I have not experienced it firsthand just tells me that you want to remove my freedoms because I have not chosen the same path as you have. It identifies you as a classist.

          • I’ve been called a LOT worse Go have a kid and grow up, then talk to me.
You are one of the few few people on here that realize that the pen is mightier than the sword. Don’t talk about things that you haven’t experienced and expect someone who has to take you seriously.

            • Why do you want to make this a competition? Who cares if you’ve been called worse? That’s not what it’s about at all. Your opinion holds zero credit to me if you are going to try to silence people who are not like you.

            • I didn’t experience anything before the 80s, does that mean I cannot talk about those times? I didn’t experience anything in any of the football games that we discuss on a daily basis, the same as you, so I guess you think we shouldn’t be talking about those either. This is about much more than experience. Open up your mind and try to understand rather than trying to create a controversy.

  2. Let’s remember this is a forum for open discussion, not for oppression. That is why most of us disbanded from the “official” Vikings website. So can we please return to discussing matters rather than squabbling over petty differences?

  3. I have no problem with a spanking but the issue becomes will someone, in the heat of the moment, go too far? And that seems to be the case here. A spanking needs to be part of a strategy, which includes explanations and role modeling for children. In fact, when spanking is used correctly, it needs to be administered only a handful of times in the whole child’s life, but it must be done with no lasting scars or marks– then it becomes abuse. Nova, you may give the evil eye, but that evil eye must signify some type of terror, or it would not be effective. My dad simply looked at me and I knew that belt may come off his waist– how many times he actually spanked me? I cannot say accurately, but maybe once or twice? Or nada? I am not certain, but spanking should never become a solution or a way to communicate. But I do not go so far that parents should be locked up in jail and their children given to state services because a parent spanked a child’s behind leaving only a 10 minute stinging sensation– plus an understanding that there are consequences for poor behavior.

  4. Contextually, the timing of this with AD could not be worse– with the whole Rice incident blowing up with this week’s video. This is not going away so easily, in my humble opinion– nor should it.

      • I believe it was a while back– this is the second grand jury that reviewed the case. The first one said there was not enough evidence. One has to wonder what else is going on behind the scenes. Who knows what larger picture is taking place– the timing right along with Rice may not be coincidence but a shot at redemption– if Goodell takes down the best RB in football, well, now, then maybe he is okay after all. Conspiracy? Conjecture moving laterally? Sure, but there are a lot of parts we don’t see.

  5. I have a daughter, my only child. She was very easy for me to bring up. I slapped her face, once, for lipping off at her mother. This was when she was about 7 years old, not 2. She now has 2 sons who are probably very normal boys – about 2 and just turned 5. They are completely different from what I remember my daughter was like. They are competitive, extremely energetic and the older one is quite manipulative.
So, Nova, to use your argument, you should go have a SON before you comment on this issue. I don’t believe that, nor does Parody, I believe.
The photos were graphic, to say the least. If they are real and I presume they are, AD went too far. He needs to understand that and get some guidance on child rearing.
The question I have is: What is the appropriate punishment from the Vikings, if any? What right does an employer have in administering punishment that is unrelated to the conditions of employment? If I had committed some criminal act, I don’t think my employer could have disciplined me further. The CBA may have a bearing on this, I don’t know. I understand the notion that AD is a public figure and must be held to a higher standard and all that but, we are all humans and we make mistakes.

    • I like your argument, but I believe the NFL is (finally) starting to realize that as role models, their players need to be held to a higher standard.

As far as the employer’s right to administer punishment, I am pretty certain that the NFL is still an At-Will job, wherein the employer and/or employee has the rights to terminate the job at any time for any reason that is not protected by law.

Some jobs do criminal background checks before hiring employees, and I think that I have seen a clause in employment offers before that indicated the job could be terminated if criminal conduct arises during the employment.

      • I am unfamiliar with US employment law. Here in Canada an employer would have to have justifiable employment-related reasons for dismissal. This would be in a situation that was not governed by a CBA. At any rate, it is really important that he gets guidance on parenting – being a father is for life and every child needs a good father to help them grow up.

  6. Parody, I apologize for my crude statement. There has been a Bobcat roaming the area for the past few weeks and has killed 2 of my neighbor’s Labs and a couple of cats. It was a pretty decent-sized one, the vet called it 38 lbs.
People have been on edge here and this thing must have had an awful blood-lust, because it attacked Sonja while she was on her lead.
If she had been free it would have been no contest, but she got tangled up in her chain. The vet says that Sonja flipped the cat on her back and tore her throat out, but it’s hind legs ripped open Sonja’s belly.
She is undergoing surgery right now and he thinks she is going to make it, and the neighbors are already buying prime rib.

    • I’d be surprised if it’s over. I’m guessing a 1-2 year hiatus, unless new information arises that can somehow absolve him (I can’t think what would do this). But by the time he gets back into the league, he’ll be wearing new colors.

    • He should be suspended and learn how to be a parent but who didn’t get their ass kicked by their dad? I’m not defending Adrian here I just think this is going to get crazy because of this Ray Rice thing. Adrian THOUGHT (stupidly) he was doing what a father does. I’d say over half the US thinks its ok to hit their kid and most certainly does. THIS IS WHY THE PACKERS ALWAYS WIN!

  7. I saw the pics, wow. I have kids and grandkids, and believe in a properly placed spanking, but what AD did is waaaayyy over the top.
I thought Adrian was different, but I was wrong, He’s just like all the rest of them!

  8. BACK TO FOOTBALL FOLKS! Heck, if this keeps up, we won’t have the NFL much longer. I wonder how a billion dollar stadium for soccer will go over with all those who opposed its construction will go over.

  9. Let’s not forget that we’re all human. I by no means condone what AP did, and I’m not a parent and probably never will be, so I have no right to pass judgment on how someone disciplines their kid. Instead of the knee jerk first reaction of cutting and suspending him indefinitely that everyone is throwing out there, maybe we should let things settle down a bit and see what legal action is taken. I do think the Vikes did the right thing and set an example for the rest of the league by deactivating him for tomorrow, but let’s remember that no one’s perfect. Maybe by this happening to him when he was a child made it seem like it wasn’t such a terrible thing. That’s obviously a huge error in judgment, but lets get him some help with the subject.

      • What you mean what am I talkin bout? People are already suggesting cutting him and kicking him out of the league for the foreseeable future. Lets let the law handle it for now, and do what they need to do. The Vikes did the right thing by deactivating him for tomorrows game, and they probably should do so until the investigation is done.

        • Well, now you phrase it more accurately. Now you say, people– before it was everyone. I didn’t see one blogger on here making any of the suggestions you put forth– and that is why I questioned you. Accuracy, my friend.

  10. This is some crazy news guys,my dad use to use a belt and few other things to discipline me,ive had marks like that.Grounding me or whatever else my parents tried didnt really work but that fear of the belt reminded me what not to do again.I guess some people just raise/discipline their children the same way their parents did with them(some not all).I wont comment on this anymore because i dont really know all the facts so im just gonna get back to football and say GO VIKES… (we will still win)

  11. Im by far the biggest A.D fan out there but, I WAS BEAT BADLY AS A CHILD SOUTHERN STILE, I HAVE NO KIDS BY NO MEANS WOULD I BEAT MY CHILD OR ANY OTHER CHILD, MY VIVID MEMORY OF A BEATING WAS MY STEP DAD SAYING HE WILL BEAT ME TILL I STOP CRYING; LASTED IM SURE 1 HOUR

  12. I think the key question on this situation is: Was it an attempt to discipline the child that went too far OR was it an act of uncontrolled rage that resulted in an injury?
I don’t know the answer to that question, but the answer is key to what should happen next. AD comes across in the spin we see as a standup guy. I want to believe that he is that way. I agree with letting the legal beagles sort it out, except that my understanding is that a Grand Jury can be used to indite a ham sandwich because it is so one-sided – there is no legal representation present and you are FORCED to answer the prosecutor’s questions. It is interesting that it was a second Grand Jury that indicted him. It could be that there is a political motivation behind the prosecutor wanted to take down a big star football player, if there is an election coming up. Maybe I read too many Michael Connelly novels!!!

    • No, you are right Cariboo– read one of my posts. The question is– how common is it to have a second grand jury formed in only a week — and one has to wonder the timing of this– with Ray Rice– and the huge pressure being put forth to do something about domestic violence. Had there been no Ray Rice this week, would this AD story have taken so much weight? Would a second grand jury have been summoned? .

  13. GET THIS SO ME AND MY SISTER WALKING AROUND GHETTO ___________WACO TEXAS______AROUND THE BLOCK OF OUR HOUSE I SPOT A REEL COOL SHINY THING__________ITS A BELT BUCKLE WITH A SNAKE ON IT A BRASS SNAKE BELT BUCKLE______I PICK IT UP ITS LIKE 5-6 FEET LONG________ SO ME AND MY SISTER WERE LIKE YEAH LETS BRING IT HOME SHOW STEP DAD ITS REEL COOL______6 INCHES WIDE 6 FEET LONG QUARTER INCH THICK________STEP DAD THOUGHT IT WAS REEL COOL CALLED IT THE SNAKE GREASED IT UP REEL THICK LEATHER JUSS LIKE A TIRE___________HUNG IT IN LIVING ROOM ON HIS TIN SOLDIER KING ARTHUR______________3_____YEARS I GOT ALMOST BEAT 2 DEATH BY THAT________I FOUND IT 2 _________CAREFUL WHUT ____U_____THINK U MITE FIND

  14. I was hit badly as a child leaving bruises and what not but i don’t think my dad should have gone to jail he just did what he thought he had to do. I turned out fine and we have a great father son relationship. I would never hit my kid but it is STILL a very common occurrence and acceptable to a lot of people. I hope the Vikings wait this thing out and then make a decision. I hate that this drags minnesota sports through the mud though we are better than this!

  15. Wow what a mess…I come back to all this crap happening-sheesh.

I will keep this as short as possible:

    Firstly-Get well soon Sonja!

Secondly-In my opinion the media has taken it too far with Goodell. It’s like he is the criminal instead of Rice…Goodell is by no means perfect, but Rice is the one who punched his then fiancée in the face (and she married him?) and knocked her out cold.

Thirdly-when I was a kid we grew up in the “belt” era…I had no problem with that, yes it stung, but I was able to sit down after a short while. AP went too far, when the adult leaves a bruise or laceration on a defenseless child they have crossed the line, it should never happen.

Some of you have mentioned above about the different types of abuse, and there are many. It happens everyday in whatever capacity it can happen in all walks of life.

  16. i would rather wait til everything settles on the AD situation before i give my opinion (no day later judging on my part either). But other than that, let’s get that front 4 going and allow the defense to push Tom Terrific and Co. to 0-2 as we go to 2-0..SKOL…

    • Context, Potato, CONTEXT. With what happened this week with Ray Rice, Vikings had to act swiftly– there is overwhelming public outrage and pressure from all areas, including congress to take action over Rice– the climate right now could not have been worse for AD’s situation. Will AD be playing for us next season? I think he might.
