Counting the Holes

With free agency right around the corner, the Vikings have an ample amount of cap space to spend on putting the team back together, but they also have an ample amount of holes that need to be filled. After cutting LB Erin Henderson for his numerous run-ins with the law, the team then saw QB Matt Cassel choose to break the second of his 2-year contract, and have recently cut DT Letroy Guion, WR Greg Childs and TE John Carlson. The team also has many players hitting free agency tomorrow due to their contracts expiring. This includes Pro Bowlers DT Kevin Williams and DE Jared Allen, starters CB Chris Cook, LB Desmond Bishop, OG Charlie Johnson, situational talents DE Everson Griffen, RB Toby Gerhart, and WR Jerome Simpson, and backups QB Josh Freeman, WR Joe Webb, OT J’Marcus Webb, C Joe Berger, DT Fred Evans, LB Larry Dean, LB Marvin Mitchell and OG Seth Olsen.

In total, after the recent extensions of CB Marcus Sherels and RB Matt Asiata, the team still needs to find the following replacements:
QB – 2
RB – 1
WR – 3
TE – 1
LG – 1
OL – 3
DT – 3
DE – 2
LB – 4
CB – 1
S – 0
K – 0
P – 0
LS – 0

Of these 21 players the team needs to find, 7 of them need to be starters (QB, LG, DT, DE, OLB, ILB & CB) or the team will be promoting backups from 2013 to starting positions in 2014.

So how would you address it Vikings faithful? What players get drafted, what players get re-signed and what extra help do you find in free agency? Remember you only have about $41 million to work with. That sounds like a lot, but when you have to pay 21 NFL talents, it will start to run dry pretty fast.

  1. Well must sign a QB. My preference 1-Cassel 2-Schaub(if rumors of his eminent release are accurate) 3-Vick 4-Ponder. My first draft choice is between Manziel or Bridgewater. If they are gone take Mcarrin or Mettenberger in the 3rd

I think Asiata, Banyard, and a later round draft pick compete to back up Peterson.

WR is in pretty good shape with Jennings, Patterson, and JWright.

TE- I like what we got.

Need to draft a guard in the second or 3rd but the rest of the OL is set.

DE- I would prefer the other side of BRob to be 1-JAllen 2-Everson Griffen 3-Michael Johnson

DT- I would prefer KWilliams start next to Floyd. Williams played Nose well in a few games he played nose.

LB- Greenway is set. MLB? Im for bringing in Bengals Vincent Ray to compete with Audie Cole and Michael Mauti. and if we dont get Bridgewater or Manziel than Id take Khalil Mack with number 8.

CB opposite of Xavier Rhodes Id prefer this to be our big name Free Agent Alteraun Verner. Put Robinson back in the slot competing with a second to fourth round draft pick.

    Safeties I like our top 3 … Smith-Sanford- Sandejo

  2. I’m convinced that Verner & Michael Johnson will be in purple this year so there’s two starters off the bat. I also think the resigning of Cassel means we’re probably going to draft a QB to develop (Garrupolo probably) so we should be able to get at least 3 more starters through the draft. Am I the only one who would really like Sammy Watkins in the 1st? Imagine another Moss/Carter/Reed

  3. Boobies…Boobies…Boobies… That’s all guys think about these days. Well they’re idiots. Show me a boob man and I’ll show you a no-brain, no-class knuckle dragger who knows nothing of the fairer sex… They don’t get it. You can’t take the measure of a good woman by ogling her chest…

It’s time to get the ass the respect it deserves!

    • Brinkley? That’s treading in the wrong direction. I thought we were all happy to see him go. Wasn’t he the excuse everybody gave for why Greenway was doing poorly – because he was trying to pick up the slack from Jasper?

  4. Vikings FA Rumors:
3/9: “The Vikings have some interest in defensive tackle Derek Landri, who was cut by the Buccaneers last month.” – Master Testfatsion, Star Tribune
3/9: “Jared Allen has whittled down his list of potential teams to less than five, and the Vikings are not among them. He will be moving on.” – Jason La Canfora
3/9: The Vikings have interest in Chargers NT Cam Thomas, according to Darren Wolfson, ESPN 1500
3/9: The Redskins, Vikings and Giants have interest in Ravens DE/DT Arthur Jones, according to Aaron Wilson.
3/8: “Thinking back on film session with Mike Zimmer, I’d be surprised if #Vikings didn’t make a run at Paul Soliai.” – Tom Pelissero, USA Today
3/8: “Count the Vikings as officially interested in CB Alterraun Verner, per source.” – Darren Wolfson, ESPN 1500

    • The last 2 are the guys I’m interested in. We need a good CB and run stuffing DT to fill out the starting roster. A couple more LBs would be nice too, but it sounds likely that we’ll be drafting at least one first-day starter for that group.

Keep it purple...
